Dave should have been advised to:

• Keep the chicken isolated
• Wear gloves when handling the chicken or cleaning up any faeces, bodily fluids or the cage/box in which the chicken is being kept/transported. If gloves cannot be used, Dave and his family should at least maintain some form hand hygiene – washing their hands thoroughly with soap and water, avoiding recontaminating their hands when turning off the tap. • Prevent the children from handling and playing with the sick chicken

Advising Dave to give the chicken some paracetamol or cooling her with a fan are both inappropriate responses.
