Take-home points

  • If you suspect an EAD, contact the EAD hotline or your District Veterinarian:
  • Assess the risk of an EAD follow the biosecurity risk assessment flow chart as featured on P18 of the AVA Biosecurity Guidelines document (PDF download)
  • Apply PPE and biosecurity protocols (e.g. isolation, decontamination etc) appropriate to the level of risk
  • You never know when an EAD might occur. Keep your differential diagnosis list broad and, with advice from the lab, be prepared to collect all samples required to come to a diagnosis.
  • While maintaining client confidentiality, keep abreast of what diseases are being diagnosed by other vets in your local area and region. You might be surprised what you discover!
