The diagnosis is coxiellosis, i.e. Q fever.
Serological testing methods, e.g. enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), are the preferred diagnostic tests at the herd level. The diagnostic value of serology is limited at the individual animal level as it reflects exposure rather than active infection with Coxiella. PCR positive results for both the vaginal swab and the placenta and foetal tissues confirms active carriage of the organism by dams and passage to foetuses.
Depending on the case and the laboratory, other exclusion test results may be presented.
