Herd information

The dairy milks approximately 300 Saanen goats with around 30 goats bought in per year. They are housed in sheds with paddock access. Does are fed on native grass paddocks, and supplemented during lactation with lucerne and minerals.

The does are naturally mated in Autumn and kid in Spring. No routine medication is used apart from occasional mastitis treatments and an integrated worm control program. The goats are vaccinated with a Clostridial 6-in-1 and Leptoshield®.

The farmer hasn’t noticed any generalised problems in the animals, apart from the current issue. She occasionally finds evidence of feral cats and pigs in the area. Mrs. Capricorn is the principal worker on the premises, but hires seasonal workers for the busiest periods in the management calendar.
