Notifiable diseases are those that must be reported to a government agency when suspected. They are diseases that can have a significant impact, be it on animal health and welfare, human health, and/or agricultural productivity or trade. Exotic diseases are notifiable, however a number of endemic diseases are too. Lists of notifiable diseases are provided by the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, as well as each State Department of Agriculture or Primary Industries. Notification requirements vary by State and Territory, so clinicians need to refer to the Notifiable List for their State or Territory. Links for these can be found here. The following exercise has been developed based on the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s list.
