The first image is of a recently expelled placenta. For reference, the second image is of a normal placenta.
The cotyledons in the expelled placenta appear red, granular, enlarged, and inflamed and the intercotyledonary region is thickened and opaque. The expelled placenta is characterised by severe, diffuse placentitis that is most likely the result of an infectious process.
